I’m dishing out my top three photography jokes to break the ice. Ever photograph a session with a nervous group of subjects? Perhaps everyone is a tad hangry, stressed or unfamiliar with being in front of the camera (I’m thinking of you large weddings). This is the real deal here, tried and true methods to get smiles on them faces. These are my go-to gags when I’m looking to break the ice with a wedding party or family portraits.

While I’ve had great success with these methods, I urge you to proceed with caution. Be sure to do an environmental scan, gage the atmosphere and consider if your subjects are the right fit for these laughs before proceeding. Enjoy these three photography jokes to break the ice.

“I’m out of film.”

I use this one especially when my clients know I’m shooting digital – if you do shoot film, or your clients might not be in the know about your digital, this might not be a safe bet.

“You all blinked.”

I use this phrase all the time in large group shots (think HUGE families) and smaller portrait groupings. It’s a good way to get smiles on faces and eliminate any tension. I usually take a few snappy snaps, then let the group know that I’m going to quickly look at my camera to make sure everything looks good. I then tell them – loudly so everyone can hear me – “We have to do it again, because I don’t know how but you all blinked!’

Start Using Your Smartphone

Pull out your smartphone instead of your camera, and start shooting – this is my Dad’s favourite gag. To him it’s absolutely hilarious. For my clients, not so much, until they realize I’m being a goofball. I’m fairly good at a deadpan convincing face, so there is a little acting here to pull this one off. You really have to believe it to get the reaction you’re hoping for once your clients know you’re joking. Again, use with caution, with the right crowd this is a perfect prank to pull out of your pocket.

Hi, I’m Janelle a photographer hailing from Edmonton Alberta. I’m all about connection and celebration. Seriously, it’s my focus from our first client meeting till the chicken dance starts. I make an effort to get to know your closest friends and family on your wedding day. Why? First, they’re probably cool people, and second, when they know me as “Janelle” the gal who plays Dungeons and Dragons and has a pet Duck, they’re going to let me into their world. My favourite moment of every wedding is right after the ceremony. This is when your friends and family smother or possibly crush you with either love or cheerful embrace. Bring on all the candid moments.

I value connection and celebration of moments over a big production.
